An evolutionary psychological perspective offers unique insights into barriers to achieving happiness and creating conditions for improving the quality of human life. These insights are based on an understanding of the human mind's evolved psychological mechanisms – the selective processes that designed them, their evolved functions, and the contexts governing their activation. This knowledge offers the best hope for holding some evolved mechanisms in check and selectively activating others to increase human happiness.
